Position Description
The Vice Chancellor for Agriculture and Natural Resources (VCIANR) is a key member of the leadership team of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), an AAU, Research I, Land-Grant University. The VCIANR is responsible for providing leadership for all agricultural and natural resource affairs in the University of Nebraska as they involve the office of the Chancellor of UNL and the President and Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska. The VCIANR reports directly to the Chancellor providing input to that position on all campus-wide matters and serves as the executive officer for the Chancellor in all matters involving the personnel, budgets and programs included within the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR).
In addition, the VCIANR is a Vice President in the University of Nebraska System, serving on the President’s Council and providing advice and counsel to the President and Board of Regents. The VCIANR is expected to provide creative and energetic leadership for all agricultural, natural resources and related affairs in the University of Nebraska system including developing partnerships among other campuses of the University.
The VCIANR is the chief administrative officer for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, which is composed of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the Agricultural Research Division, UNL Extension, and the IANR research and extension components of the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS). The Nebraska Forest Service, including the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, reports to the VCIANR. In addition, the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska have delegated primary administrative responsibility to the Vice President for operation of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture at Curtis, Nebraska, a two-year degree granting campus of the University of Nebraska under the control and management of the Board.
Required qualifications include a doctorate degree with a proven record of academic and administrative experience at a land-grant university or equivalent credentials and experience in a non-academic setting, and an understanding of the importance of a university to the vitality of food, agriculture, agribusiness, natural resources, human resources and communities in the state. Individual must have the ability to assess both the current and future needs of Nebraska agriculture, must understand the importance of both basic research and translational research in support of agriculture, and must be responsible, innovative, and persistent in promoting the teaching and research of IANR as well as the engagement of IANR with the people of the state. Must have a strong academic or professional record with credentials to merit appointment as a tenured full professor within the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Experience at the level of dean/director or above preferred. Must have the skills necessary to articulate UNL’s mission, values, and needs and to communicate them persuasively to internal and external constituencies. The VCIANR must be able to work in a collegial framework with the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, UNL’s Chief Academic Officer, to enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching and research among faculty in IANR and in other units, as well as the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance who, with the Chancellor, constitute the campus leadership and management team. The position also requires the ability to relate to the Board of Regents and other governmental authorities. An ability to work in a collegial relationship with faculty is essential.
