Core Expectations of Academic Unit Leaders in IANR

  • Culture and Climate: Fostering an inclusive culture in which all contributions to the team are appreciated and recognized, collaboration and innovation are encouraged, and the abilities of all are engaged to fully realize the potential of the team, and of each team member.
  • Resource Management: Aligning resources to advance strategic vision. Managing the financial and physical resources responsibly to maximize the effectiveness of those resources, exhibiting fiscal discipline and transparency, and utilizing best fiscal management practices.
  • Inclusive Excellence: Ensuring opportunities are open to all, programs are inclusive of all constituencies, and efforts are made to engage diverse audiences, especially those that are traditionally underrepresented. 
  • Strategic Vision: Synthesizing a vision for the unit with input from faculty, staff, and stakeholders that encompasses all programs within the unit, seeks and deploys personnel and financial resources strategically, and is continuously examined for relevancy and refreshed regularly.
  • Collaboration: Supporting, coordinating, and partnering with departments/schools and other entities internal and external to the university that support and/or align with departmental programming, strategic vision and faculty expertise. 
  • Nurturing the Success of Others: Supporting the professional and career development of the faculty, staff, and students within the unit. This includes encouraging and providing support for others, and ensuring that guidance documents are relevant and up-to-date and that they promote access, equity and inclusion in their content and application.

The following are examples of tangible markers indicating that expectations have been met.

  • Faculty annual evaluations that document that a diversity of contributions are valued (that there isn’t a narrow range of contributions that constitute the currency of the unit)

Resource Management

  • Evidence of resources being deployed to advance strategic goals.
  • Utilization of sound fiscal management strategies. 

Inclusive Excellence

  • Diversity profile review
  • Intentional activities and initiatives to increase access and engage diverse audiences

Strategic Vision

  • The unit has strategic visioning document.
  • Evidence that the strategic visioning document is informing decision-making.
  • The strategic visioning document has either been developed or re-examined within the past 3 years.

Collaboration

  • Network/collaboration map

Nurturing the Success of Others

  • Mentoring map
  • Documented mentoring plan for faculty and evidence of its implementation.
  • Documented mentoring plan for students and evidence of its implementation.
  • Bylaws and guidance documents are in place and regularly reviewed for relevance.
  • Faculty and staff evaluation procedures that demonstrate best practices.
